NCT Antenatal Courses

NCT antenatal courses aim to give you information to help you gain confidence so you can make decisions that are right for you during childbirth and as new parents.

Parents to be find the courses enjoyable and many make new friends.

You will have a say in what is covered in your course. The courses are all slightly different because the person teaching will have their own style.

We cover:-
How to cope with your labour
Breathing awareness
Relaxation techniques
Positions for labour and birth
Pain management options
Medical aspects of birth (such as induction, instrumental birth and
caesareans)
Care for you after your baby is born
Baby care
Early days of parenting
Breastfeeding.

All NCT antenatal teachers have had a thorough training with the NCT. They do not need to be medically qualified to teach. They are expected to keep up to date with the latest developments in maternity care and must re-register with the NCT every year. We review their teaching regularly.

They are there to offer support, information, practical skills and resources to help you make informed choices for yourself and your baby. They do not offer medical advice and you are asked to take any questions about your medical care or that of your baby to your midwife or doctor.

NCT Postnatal Courses

NCT postnatal courses are a really good way for you to meet others and make new friends.

You will meet regularly with other parents to share ideas and talk about the ups and downs of being a new parent.

Postnatal group leaders take on the practical arrangements for the group and offer support and information to help you adapt to your new role.

The groups are informal and enjoyable and help you to talk and find different ideas or solutions that fit into your own lifestyle. We cover issues such as

• the difference between the expectations and reality of motherhood
• the pros and cons of returning to work
• balancing time
• best tips for settling a crying baby

The postnatal group leaders don’t tell you about the best way to bring up your baby. Neither do they talk about child development, weaning or first aid-these are areas where health visitors and breastfeeding counsellors are more equipped to offer a combination of information and support.

We do spend time with you, listening to your feelings and concerns and helping you adjust to motherhood.
