I’m still bleeding heavily. Is it safe to use tampons?

It is generally not advised to use tampons until after your bleeding has stopped which usually takes about six weeks, although if you are breast feeding this may take longer. So, you could use tampons for your first period after the birth.

The bleeding after you have given birth is known as ‘lochia’ – partly comes from the place where the placenta was attached to the wall of the uterus. It is possible to contract an infection of this wound, like any wound, so it is important to pay high attention to personal hygiene during this period to keep it free from any bacteria. Bacteria can be introduced through using a tampon, so this is why their use is best avoided.
