midwivesonline.com Launch Campaign to Save Lives

A UK-wide campaign has been launched to save the lives of mothers and babies who are at risk due to a national shortage of 10 000 midwives.

Midwivesonline.com who offer much needed professional-led information direct to mothers and their midwifery corer’s, are campaigning for on behalf of the mothers and babies whose lives are being lost due to a lack of appropriate care. They are asking people across the country to sign a petition demanding that the government increase the number of midwives being trained and to increase the budget for Heads of Midwifery to recruit more frontline midwives to care for expectant and new mothers and their families.

By signing this you declare that you are extremely concerned at the inadequate number of midwives in the NHS and the increased number of injuries and deaths caused by the low number of midwives.

You therefore request that the House of Commons call upon the Government to increase the number of midwives to be trained from 2009 – 2012 by an additional 5,000 (1) to guarantee fulltime employment for all newly qualified midwives(2) to provide the necessary resources for Heads of Midwifery to increase the numbers of experienced midwives in their maternity units by 10,000 between 2009 -2012 (3)and provide at least 3000 extra midwives for frontline practice in 2009 (4) provide one midwife per mother for the whole of labour(5) provide every pregnant mother with a ‘named midwife’(6) and an acceptable level of midwifery contact for care during pregnancy and the post natal period(7) to increase the numbers of University based Midwifery Lecturer/Practitioners for the training of student midwives pro rata.(8)
